Who are you?

My name is Nicholas C. Johnson! I create art, comics, and videos under the alias Bob Van Starr!

Where do you live?

I still live in beautiful Downeast Maine. I specifically live in the town of Calais, but more specifically I am from a more rural area called Red Beach. Red Beach is famous for it's red granite, and for being close to St. Croix island.

What’s your home life like?

I feel as if everyones home life has changed drastically since mid-march. I am a teacher, so I taught remotely from home for several months. Fortunately my brother, and our two dog's were with us during the Quarantine. Now i'm tentatively back at work, and am trying to anticipate what the next few months will be like!

What genre(s) do you like to write? To read?

I have a few love's as far as genre's go. I absolutely love Science Fiction Fantasy. I love to read, and write Science Fiction. Through quarantine I went through quite a big Ray Bradbury kick! That guy is a genius. I also really enjoy H.G. Wells! I really like to write science fiction and fantasy as well. I hope to release a novel of some of my earlier works in that genre at some point in time!

As much as I love reading, and writing science fiction and fantasy. I generally find I end up writing cynical comedy. Loosely based on my own life.

Why did you start writing?

I started writing because I wanted to create something that was special and unique to me. I wanted to see the character's in my head alive on a page in front of me. This is my second full year of publishing, and I've found the process to be incredibly rewarding.

What do you do when you’re not writing?

I recently got a puppet, based on one of my character's Carl The Crow. I've been making puppet videos when i'm not writing. I kind of consider this writing as well though, because I have to write the lines for the puppet.

I also love to hang out with my family, and friends. I enjoy hanging out in beautiful scenic Maine, kayaking, and swimming!

Where do you like to go when looking for a new book to read?

I like to actually go to the book store and browse. I have a few different book stores, and a few different specific shelves that I check out. I like to have a few different books in rotation. I also do a lot of deep digging on author's I really love.

At what point do you call it quits when reading a new book?

I typically call it quit's pretty early. I often don't start anything to burdensome that I don't think i'll be able to finish. I really like comics, and their short so I can typically finish!

Are you independently or traditionally published?

I am independently published! Maybe some day I will be traditionally published!

How many books/stories have you published so far?

I have been publishing for two years now. I have published 12 comic books in that time, as well as a Generation-Z vocabulary enhancing book called Vocabulary Vice. I also published a poetry book under my publishing company for my little brother!

What book/story are you currently promoting or working on?

I just released LOBZILAH: King of The Lobsters!#1 Which is available on-line now!

I am working on A Callow Corvus Graphic Novel. I also have a few years worth of comics mostly laid out, featuring various character's that I will roll out based on time, and what i'm feeling at the time!

What’s the elevator pitch?

The Elevator pitch! Lobzilah is an awesome Kaiju creature from the depths of the Maine coast! What could he possibly destroy next! What other giant crazy Kaiju's will battle the Demon of the deep.

(Pulls up his phone and shows you the first stop motion Lobzilah that started it all.)

How long have you been working on it?

I've been working on various art projects since March 2016. So i'm coming up on my five year artiversy this year! I'll be releasing my first book of paintings around that time!

When will it be available to buy? Where?

It will be available to buy on Amazon!

How can readers find you?

Readers can find me on most social media platforms! Just look for Bob Van Starr, or Van Starr Productions! You can also see lot's of my work on my website!

What inspires you to keep writing?

"Genius is one percent inspiration, and ninety-nine percent perspiration."
Thomas Edison
I really agree with this quote. You can have the best idea ever, but if your not willing to work towards your goals then you may never make it! Know where you want to be, and work hard towards making that dream possible.

Anything you’d like to add?

Mr. Adams! Thanks so much for the opportunity (Again.)

Keep in touch!

My Best,

Nicholas C. Johnson
A.K.A Bob Van Starr
