Author Interview with Maryann Miller

Who are you?

Maryann Miller

Where do you live?

I live in a small town in NE Texas. I recently moved to the city from a bit of acreage in the Piney Woods of East Texas. I miss the quiet of the country life.

What’s your home life like?

My home is ruled by four cats. Even the dog, a rather large dog, is intimidated by one of the cats, Sammy. Sammy is part Siamese. Need I say more? I have plants, too. Lots of plants, and I cry when one of them dies.

What genre(s) to you like to write? To read?

I write and read primarily mysteries, and I like them dark and edgy. I'm way past cozy mysteries. That said, I also really enjoy reading a women's novel and/or mainstream. What matters most to me are the characters. Give me somebody who is real, multi-dimensional, and engaging and you've got me hooked.

When writing, I try to remember what I love about story and do my best to get that down in my books. I've written everything from mystery to non-fiction.

Why did you start writing?

Reading, books, stories were all an important part of my life from the time I could first read. My childhood was less than stellar, so I could lose myself in the wonderful worlds created for me by authors. When I was about 10, I decided I wanted to write stories that might someday give some other young girl a glimpse into a different life.

For years I wrote short stories, many of them about horses because I was a horse-crazy girl, and one day my boyfriend at the time suggested I write about people. It took a while, but I finally followed his advice.

What do you do when you’re not writing?

When I'm not working in my office, I might be outside walking my dog, or puttering with my plants, trying not to kill another. Plant, not dog. Or I'm quilting, working jigsaw puzzles or coloring. I had to laugh when adult coloring became such a fad. I've been coloring my whole life.
Live theatre is another of my interests, and I go to see productions at the community theatre as often as I can. For a number of years I played on stage, as a performer and director, and one of my greatest joys was mounting a play I wrote.

Where do you like to go when looking for a new book to read?

Due to some difficulties with reading, I listen to a lot of audio books, which I get from my library. When I can actually read a book, I get quite a few to review on my blog, so I don't often have to go looking for a book.

Then, of course, there are book festivals and events where I can meet authors and get signed copies of their books. That is always a treat.

At what point do you call it quits when reading a new book?

If I get about 50 pages into a book and the protagonist isn't strong and engaging, I will probably stop reading. If things are happening without motivation or any kind of set up, that will make me stop, too. That goes for books sent to me for review, as well as books I've purchased or borrowed from the library.

I used to think I had to finish a book no matter what, but, heck, I'm old. I don't need to waste time reading a book I'm not enjoying.

Are you independently or traditionally published?

My first books, nonfiction, were published by Rosen Publishing in New York. Then a few of my mysteries were published by Five Star Cengage. I was thrilled with that because the books were sent to the big trade publications for review. OPEN SEASON and STALKING SEASON, the first two books in the Seasons Mystery Series got very favorable reviews from Kirkus, Library Journal, and Publisher's Weekly.

After that, I published several books and short stories myself.

How many books/stories have you published so far?

A rough count of books and short stories that are currently published is 29. That's a mix of fiction and nonfiction.

What book/story are you currently promoting or working on?

The book I'm most excited about right now is EVELYN EVOLVING, a story I wrote about my mother's life. It's been a long time coming, and I'm so thrilled that it is finally published, released by Creativia.

How long have you been working on it?

Oh my gosh, I almost hate to say how long it took me to write EVELYN EVOLVING. Keep in mind that I didn't work on it every day for fifty-plus years, but that's how long I wanted to write my mother's story. She had a harsh, challenging life and once I got old enough, I understood how strong she was, even though I'd not always seen her that way. That's when I knew I wanted to write a book about her.

When will it be available to buy? Where?

Right now EVELYN EVOLVING is available in paperback and releasing for Kindle on May 19th; but it will come out in audio and hardback in the future. No set dates for those releases at this point.

How can readers find you?

What inspires you to keep writing?

"A room without a book is like a body without a soul."
I've seen that attributed to several sources, but I believe it originated with Cicero.

"I get a lot of letters from people. They say: "I want to be a writer. What should I do?" I tell them to stop writing to me and get on with it."
Ruth Rendell

Anything you’d like to add?

Thanks so much for the opportunity for the interview. It's always fun to share about books and stories and the things that make them special.

My thanks to Maryann for joining the Laughably Inane Blog family. I wish her all the best in her writing endeavors.
