Who are you?

I'm a hybrid author, a citizen of the world, a happily married wife, a mother of mine, his and those who've adopted us along the way, including various rescue dogs and cats. I'm a teacher, a sister, and a friend. I'm a walker in the woods, swimmer in lakes and a grateful celebrant of life.

Where do you live?

Currently, Düsseldorf, Germany. Before that,Switzerland, Indonesia, Israel, England, Serbia and the US.

What’s your home life like?

Happy and productive. I write full-time, five days a week, and on the weekends I tend to the business end of independent publishing. I do yoga, read, and walk my dog a lot to get the creative juices going. Our kids are grown and live on three different continents, but we see each other as often as we can, and thanks to today's technology, we stay in close touch. My husband is my best friend, and we spend a lot of time together, playing cards, watching football (the beautiful kind) and tennis, enjoying the outdoors, good food and wine. I used to be part of a huge ex-pat community when I was teaching in international schools, and many of my former students and colleagues still find their way to our home, wherever that may be in the world.

What genre(s) do you like to write? To read?

I write fantasy. Beyond the Green Door (YA Lothian) was my first published novel. The four books of my epic medieval fantasy series, The Drinnglennin Chronicles, will all be launched in early 2020. My target audience is New Adult, but my beta readers range from 18-70, and I think readers of fantasy love a great saga, regardless of their age. My reading tastes are eclectic—fantasy, literary, speculative and historical fiction, poetry, the classics and non-fiction. Dorothy Dunnett's The Lymond Chronicles are my all-time favorites. The best books I've read in the past few months were The Overstory by Richard Powers and David Wallace-Wells's The Uninhabitable Earth. Wallace-Wells's book is about the future awaiting us as a result of our reckless disregard for the health of our planet, and should be required reading for every denizen on Earth.

Why did you start writing?

Because I had no choice not to.

What do you do when you’re not writing?

Think about writing, while enjoying the daily routine mentioned above. I'm also active on social media—particularly in the #writingcommunity on Twitter. I do a bit of travel—back to Jakarta where I lived, taught and raised a family for 24 wonderful year to attend the HS graduations of former 4th graders. This one coming up will be for the last class I taught... the end of era for me. I spend a part of every summer in NH at our family home with relatives and friends from around the world.

Where do you like to go when looking for a new book to read?

To trusted friends for recommendations, previously read authors, Booker Prize winners. And I do a lot of rereading of favorite classics from all genres.

At what point do you call it quits when reading a new book?

If the writing is poor, it doesn't matter how unique the story line is. Writing that sings and strikes a chord deep in my heart will keep me turning pages every time.

Are you independently or traditionally published?

Both.

How many books/stories have you published so far?

Only one to date—Beyond the Green Door, Lothian 2002.

What book/story are you currently promoting or working on?

Portents of Chaos, the first book of The Drinnglennin Chronicles, my NA/Adult epic medieval fantasy. It launches online on Jan. 3, 2020. The remaining three books will be rapid-released in the first half of the year. Interested readers can check out my website:

What’s the elevator pitch?

Step into an epic world of sword and sorcery, intrigue and betrayal...

The realm of Drinnglennin hangs poised on the cusp of chaos, for Urlion Konigur, the High King, is dying and has yet to name an heir. Rumors abound that the Helgrins, Drinnglennin’s bitterest foes, are preparing their longboats to raid the Isle’s shores, while the roving å Livåri folk, for whom the island kingdom is the last sanctuary, are strangely disappearing. And in distant Belestar, the fabled dragons are stirring from their self-imposed exile…

Drinnglennin’s hopes lie with the wizard Morgan, who must gather together and safeguard the king’s possible heirs, all three of whom are coming of age. Yet a dangerously powerful house seeks the succession for one of their own, even if it means disrupting the fragile peace of the realm.

One thing is certain: whoever next sits on the Einhorn Throne will determine the fate not only of Drinnglennin, but of all who dwell in the Known World.

How long have you been working on it?

:) Six years. I started writing The Drinnglennin Chronicles in August of 2014, and I’ve waited to release the four-book series until the last was completed. When I made the decision to go indie, it was with the understanding that my manuscript (and thus my readers) would benefit from the same treatment it would receive from a top publishing house. I am incredibly fortunate to have my wonderful editors, Betsy Mitchell and David Gatewood, Gwen Shackleton's original art work on the cover, the amazing cartography of David Sheehan, David Summer's unique formatting and all of my insightful beta readers on my team. My son, Will, a lover of the genre and a talented writer in his own right, has been my toughest critic as well as my most valued. I'm incredibly excited to finally get the story out to readers.

When will it be available to buy? Where?

Portents of Chaos launches on Jan. 3, 2020. The e-book will be on KDP Select, and I will go wide with the paperback and hardcopy.

What inspires you to keep writing?

“Facts are the soil from which the story grows. Imagination is a last resort.”
― Dorothy Dunnett
“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies", said Jojen. "The man who never reads lives only one.”
― George R.R. Martin, A Dance with Dragons
"The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and a lightning bug.” —Samuel Clemens
