Author Interview with Gord Lanyon

Who are you?

My name is Gord Lanyon. I was a computer science teacher for over 35 years but I’m retired now. One of the great advantages of retirement is that it gives you the time to do the things you’ve always wanted to do but couldn’t fit into a busy schedule. Writing and travel are two things that fit together really well. They take up much of my free time now.

Where do you live?

I live in beautiful Victoria, BC. I used to live in Vancouver but was happy to move away from the big city to something a lot more personable. Victoria is much quieter but still big enough to have all the perks of city life that my wife and I want.

What’s your home life like?

I read an article once written by a cancer survivor. In it he said that the first word that he thinks when he wakes up in the morning is the word ‘gratitude’. That made a serious impression on me. After reading his story I’ve always tried to start my day the same way he does. My life is good. As I mentioned I’m able to travel. I have a wife who is tolerant of my more quirky behaviors and loving. I have two dogs I adore, both chihuahua crosses. Away from writing we travel a lot. Italy is one of my favorite countries to visit. We recently returned from a trip to Israel where we visited Jerusalem and Bethlehem. Neither of us are especially religious but there’s too much history in those cities for you not to be affected.

What genre(s) do you like to write? To read?

I’m into science fiction and fantasy. I’ve always liked things with open ended possibilities. Just look at how much our world has changed over the last 50 years. Much of what we take as normal would have seemed ‘magical’ or far fetched back then. Authors like Arthur C. Clark wrote a ton of fiction that predicted the rise of much of the tech we have today. That’s cool.

Why did you start writing?

Over the years as I read great books or watched amazing theater productions like ‘Les Miserables’ I’d always think how lucky the writers or the actors were to have been part of something so creative and wonder causing. Then one day I decided I wanted to be part of that group. I wanted to create something from nothing like they had. I started writing. It wasn’t easy. I just recently finished a book I think is finally worthy of being read. People work for their money, they should get something of value in return for it.

What do you do when you’re not writing?

Life is full of adventures. My wife is great that way. Like I said, I’m quite fortunate. We hike a lot. We usually spend time in Palm Springs because the weather is so good there and the area abounds with excellent hiking.

Where do you like to go when looking for a new book to read?

Over the years I’ve accumulated a huge library. Sometimes I reread old favorites like Bradbury’s “Something Wicked This Way Comes”. Sometimes I go to the library and just pick a random book from the science fiction or fantasy selection.

At what point do you call it quits when reading a new book?

I don’t give up easily on a book because they all have something to tell us. If a book hasn’t grabbed me by the third chapter I usually skip ahead and take some shortcuts until I reach the end. If the writer has established the central question of the book I at least want to know how that’s been resolved. I can’t actually remember a book I didn’t finish.

Are you independently or traditionally published?

Independently published. I thought about traditional publishing but the whole process seemed so slow. Also, when I looked up the agents - so many of them looked so young it was hard for me to accept that I needed their expertise to market my book. LOL. The other thing of course is I wanted the book to be mine and no one else’s. When you publish traditionally you give up a lot of the rights to the book. I didn’t want that. This was mine and I wanted to keep it that way.

How many books/stories have you published so far?

Hundreds that I never finished. That’s the key to being a writer. Finish what you start. I was only able to take the next step after I retired because then I had the time to do it right. At least, I think I have. Learning is life-long and so is learning to be a good writer. The same applies to any other type of work I suppose.

What book/story are you currently promoting or working on?

My new book is called “The God Hunters”. You can find it on Amazon right here:

What’s the elevator pitch?

If you don’t mind I’ll just provide my novel blurb. I worked on this so hopefully it will provide the reader with some incentive to look up my novel on Amazon:

Nicholas Benson is a university professor and plain, ordinary guy just out for a good time. The alien Katel is a Hunter, a Tik, whose abilities allow her to travel through the multiverse. She’s hunting an escaped criminal who used to be a leading member of the ruling Council on HomeWorld. The trouble is, she needs a body and Nick has the only one available. It’s a weak, human body however, so she changes it; makes it stronger. Now NIck has powers. He can do things he’s always dreamed of doing as a boy. The trouble is, so can his enemies, and none of them appreciate being hunted. Nick would like to walk away but he can’t. The alien sharing his body has powers as well, and she’s not willing to give up the hunt so easily. Whether he likes it or not, Nick’s a Hunter now with a murdering mastermind to find.

How long have you been working on it?

This probably took me two years to write and edit. I must have edited the book 12 times before I finally sent it out to a copy editor for further work. He and I went over it another 3 times. That was hard work. You get so immersed in your own story it becomes almost impossible to find mistakes so it’s necessary to have an outside editor.

When will it be available to buy? Where

It’s available right now on Amazon at this link:

You can search it out yourself if you want on Amazon - The God Hunters by Gordon Lanyon.

How can readers find you?

Anyone who wants to write me - my website has a contact page where they can leave their info. I love that by the way. I’ve already had a few email and it’s a delight to answer them.

Anything you’d like to add?

One thing I suppose, live a life of gratitude.

My thanks to Gord Lanyon for participating in My Laughably Inane Blog. I wish him all the best in his writing and safety in his travels.
