Author Interview with Carlos Colón

Who are you?

Man, I have no idea. I'm still working on that. Sadly, I'm getting older and time is running out so I may never find the answer. But for your purposes, I am Carlos Colón, author of the "Sangre" novels.

Where do you live?

What are you a stalker? I live out on the Jersey Shore, New Jersey USA.

What’s your home life like?

Okay, now you're getting weird. I live with my beautiful wife of almost 40 years, Maria, and my clingy cat named Tuco. Both of our children, Christopher and Victoria are grown and have moved on out to start lives of their own.

What genre(s) do you like to write? To read?

I like to write and read everything, which is actually demonstrated in my "horror" novels. Although the "Sangre" stories involve a vampire vigilante named Nicky Negrón, readers will find elements of true life, history, comedy, family drama, tragedy and deep character studies, all in one novel.

Why did you start writing?

I always loved creating, whether is was writing stories or music. I also used to front a rock 'n' roll band on the Jersey Shore. There is something special about making something that is your own and having others appreciate it.

What do you do when you’re not writing?

Sadly, neither writing nor performing with my band has brought in the funds needed to cover the expenses of living, so I am still working full-time in the food industry. But no matter how busy I was during anytime in my life, I always prioritized time with my family. With whatever time I have left, I watch TV, movies and surf through the Internet. Yep, I'm pretty boring.

Where do you like to go when looking for a new book to read?

My wife is a supervisor at the local library so I never have to go far. Of late, though, I've been focusing on reading and reviewing independent authors. We really need to support each other.

At what point do you call it quits when reading a new book?

I can't ever recall ever doing that, but there were times where if the story wasn't grabbing me, I'd start skipping pages just to see where the book was going.

Are you independently or traditionally published?

Traditional publishers make it next to impossible to consider anyone that doesn't have representation, and I have never been able to find someone to represent me. However, there are small publishers that are just a step above independent, and I have been fortunate enough to have worked with two of them. Currently both of my novels are with Hellbound Books Publishing.

How many books/stories have you published so far?

So far, I just published the two "Sangre" novels, "The Color of Dying" and "The Wrong Side of Tomorrow". I wasn't really planning on writing the second one but readers fell in love with the lead character, Nicky Negrón, and wanted to read more. Nicky can alternately be tragic, horrifying, hilarious, and even heroic. That odd combination was an absolute blast to write and fortunately, for many, a blast to read.

What book/story are you currently promoting or working on?

Well, promotion-wise, this holiday we are offering a special where you can get both novels for the price of one. So readers who want to read the whole Nicky saga will have the opportunity to take advantage of a great deal and enjoying both stories in one release. As for what I'm working on, two producers have asked me to write the pilot for a proposed television series based on the "Sangre" novels. This thing has been going on for three years now when I wrote the first pilot, so what I'm working on actually is a rewrite. They want me to add more sex and gore. Perverts!

What’s the elevator pitch?

Nicky Negron had a rough life, but when he died, his troubles were just beginning. Nicky's story has been described as haunting, hilarious, horrifying and heartbreaking. Being undead isn't everything it's cracked up to be.

How long have you been working on it?

The roots for the first novel began to develop over thirty years ago. I probably typed up my first word sometime around a dozen years ago. The first release, "Sangre: The Color of Dying" turned up in a poorly edited edition around 2015 and then a better, cleaned-up version when I signed on with Hellbound Books in 2016. The sequel, "Sangre: The Wrong Side of Tomorrow" was released in the late Spring of this past year.

When will it be available to buy? Where?

Both are available now at the Hellbound Books website, Amazon, Barns & Noble, and even Wal-Mart, so you can buy it wearing your slippers and pajama bottoms.

How can readers find you?

Who said I want to be found? Actually, all kidding aside, I love meeting people, especially if they read my books. I have a Facebook page for the novels. I also have an author page on Amazon and Goodreads.

What inspires you to keep writing?

Nicky likes to often say:
"Rules are for the living."
Tragic as his life may have been, he occasionally enjoys the perks that come with being undead. I enjoy writing but it is a long, grueling task. Since the money has been lucrative, it is praise that we small-time writers feed on. When someone puts a good review on Amazon and/or Goodreads, that is what inspires us. So if you've read our books and enjoyed them, damn it, then take a moment to write a review. Remember, we took years to put together our stories to bring them out to you. Take a few minutes to get online and share a little love about what you read.

Anything you’d like to add?

Yeah, if you have pre-conceived notions about theses novels because the lead character is a vampire, throw them out the window. Take every reason that doesn't interest you about reading a "vampire novel" and reverse them. You will find yourself reading something like you've never read before. But if you do like vampires novels, prepare to read the most fully realized character you have ever read in this genre. This book is not about fantasy. It is about real life. If something like the events in this book ever happened, how would real people react? I dare say this will be the most entertaining book you have ever read that has a lead character with fangs.

Many thanks to Carlos for participating in My Laughably Inane Blog. I wish him all the best in his personal, professional, and writing endeavors.
