Who are you?

Brad Carl

Where do you live?

Kansas City, Missouri. I was born in raised in Iowa, though.

What’s your home life like?

My wife wants me to tell you that it sucks - and it probably does - for HER. I live with my wife, Kristi, and 9 year-old athlete daughter, Presley.

She keeps us busy and stressed. And by "us" I am referring to Kristi. Somehow I have become lucky enough to get to choose which stuff I let stress me out. That could be because Kristi doesn't want to fight me about it. Or it also might be that my meds are finally starting to work. (Shrug.)

What genre(s) to you like to write? To read?

Psychological Suspense is probably the best way to describe what I write and probably what I like to read most. I'd even throw in the word "drama" for my writing. It's like "Psychological Suspense Drama." When I first started writing the 4-book serial, Grey Areas, I didn't have genre in mind. I just wrote and then realized I needed to categorize it to market and sell it. I also like to read and write horror/supernatural-y stuff.

Why did you start writing?

I don't know. I started doing it around first or second grade when I fell in love with the Hardy Boys books. I would write my own Hardy Boys "books." Basically, I've been writing off and on for about forty years. But I didn't take it seriously until a few years ago when I read a book called Write. Publish. Repeat. It was then that I said to myself "I can do this."

What do you do when you’re not writing?

I spend a lot of time on the marketing and business side of my writing. I also really love watching my daughter play sports. In order to ease the competitive feelings I have while watching, I recently started bowling.

Where do you like to go when looking for a new book to read?

Amazon and Goodreads are the best! There are also some great Facebook Groups out there.

At what point do you call it quits when reading a new book?

Usually when it takes me an hour to read the first page. Nowadays when this happens it's usually because I am re-writing (editing) the author's prose in my head. Otherwise I'll quit reading a book when I find myself not caring if I pick it up again or not. That means I'm not really very interested in the story.

Are you independently or traditionally published?

100% independent. I'm a control freak - what can I say?

How many books/stories have you published so far?

Roughly 9, depending on how you look at it. My Amazon Author page can verify.

What book/story are you currently promoting or working on?

My latest novel is titled Craft Beer Burning. More about it in a moment. I'm also working on my second short story collection that will hopefully be out later this year. Finally, I excited to announce that my story "In Her Room" is being published by Fluky Fiction in a collection titled When Glints Collide. It's expected to be released in October. Keep an eye on my website and social media for updates.

What’s the elevator pitch?

Craft Beer Burning is about two lifelong friends who start a brewery and how it affects their relationship and those around them. This one really dials in the "Psychological Drama" genre.

How long have you been working on it?

I worked on it during the second half of 2016.

When will it be available to buy? Where?

It was released in March of 2017 and is available at all major online retailers including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and iTunes.

How can readers follow you?

Anything you’d like to add?

I love to hear from people so please don't hesitate to contact me for a comment or to     ask questions - and that invitation is open to readers and writers alike! I get asked a lot why I give some books out for free. (hint) The simple answer is, I want to build trust with my readers and show them that my work is worth paying for. I look at being an author as a long-term commitment, so it's important for me to build a loyal readership now when I know I will have more and more material for them to devour as the years go by.

Many thanks to Brad Carl for participating in this interview with the Laughable Blog. I wish him great success in his writing and happiness to his family.
