Another Author Caught In My Web

Who are you?
Nicholas Adams

How many books/short stories have you written?
I’ve written one novel, Avenging Angels, and three short stories. I’ve self-published the novel and one short story, Imprint. The other short stories are either in the process of submitting to publishers has been submitted to The Writers of the Future contest.

Where can we buy, or see them?
Avenging Angels is available on Amazon. o $2.99 eBook o $18.99 Paperback (438 Pages)  Imprint is available as a Free download through my website by signing up for my newsletter. o www.nicholasadamswrites.weebly.com  L.E.A.P. will be available after signing with a publisher

Give us an insight into some of your main character(s) and the inspiration behind him/her.
Evangeline Evans, Avenging Angels:
Evangeline is a military pilot on Olympus, a futuristic Citadel ruled by the Quorum of Zeus. Abandoned by her parents at 13, she’s had to do whatever it took to remain a part of Olympic society and joining the Corps was her only option to becoming another outcast in the LTZ (Low-Tech Zone). She finds a new family in her second husband, Jack Evans, and together they find refuge between to two societies (neither of which they truly belong). Evangeline is tough, but tender, reserved but fiercely loyal to Jack and those under her command. Her deepest longing is to find her parents and find out why they left her behind. o Inspiration: A big-city girl with the ideal life loses it all. What is she willing to sacrifice to hold onto the only life she’s ever known? And how do her dreams change as life keeps throwing her under the bus?
Jack Evans, Avenging Angels:
Jack is an Artificial Intelligence designer and creator of Ground Zero, the most popular simulated-combat arena on Olympus. Quiet and brilliant, a classic introvert, Jack still can’t believe a woman like Evangeline chose him. Having grown up in the LTZ, Jack still enjoys a simple life, and sees technology merely as a means to make his wife happy. Jack’s motives lead him to develop familial surrogates (AI children) and a special project that will become the key to their survival. o Inspiration: Small-town boy. Brilliant but geeky and reclusive. How does he navigate the “big city” and still keep his small-town values? What happens to the wide-eyed dreamer when he gets his “brass ring?”
Malcolm Silvestra, Imprint:
Malcolm is a brilliant engineer and doctor who develops 3D nanomodeling technology to fabricate artificial organs and body parts. But the unforeseen side effects nearly decimate humanity. Exiled to the frozen tundra, Malcolm must fix his mistake, or be executed. The rest of the world be damned, Malcolm’s only goal is to cure his ailing wife who is trapped in her own diseased body. All alone with a debilitated spouse, Malcolm has little time to save two lives. o Inspiration: What would a husband do to save his wife? What would he suffer or sacrifice to ease her pain and suffering? How would he react to getting her back, but in a manner different than what he expected?

Cynthiana/Synthia, Imprint:
Cynthiana Silvestra, ever kind and optimistic with a fiery, deeply romantic and passionate personality, suffers from The Scald: a disease that has left her entombed in a non-functioning body. Her greatest desire is to be whole and resume a normal, loving marriage with her husband. His latest construct enables her to become free from her mortal prison, but the side effects are starting to play tricks on her mind. o Inspiration: What does a person do when they regain their freedom? How do they react when that newly obtained freedom is in jeopardy?

What does he/she do that is so special?
Evangeline Evans has the highest rating for Telemetric Remote Control in recorded history and the only pilot successfully able to interface with an experimental vehicle named the Seraphim.  Jack Evans has an uncanny ability to construct computer simulations that border on cognitive intelligence.

Malcolm is a genius when it comes to nano-engineering, leading him to synthesize artificial body parts and full body replacements.

What genre(s) do you write under?
Mostly Science fiction (Avenging Angels, Imprint & L.E.A.P.) however I’m currently writing my first fantasy novel.

Who started/inspired you to write?
Picture
Carol Shields
I’ve always loved creating imaginary worlds in my head, but I never considered writing them down until I came across a quote that I’d originally attributed to Joss Whedon. Later I learned that Carol Shields actually said it “Write the book you want to read, the one you cannot find.” That idea prompted me to write Avenging Angels. I’d been waiting for years for someone to write a book or make a movie based, even loosely, on the ideas I’d come up with.

Does writing energize or exhaust you?
Writing energizes me, no question. I’ve even written a blog post about how “Writing makes me happy!” My dream is to one day be able to write full-time without having to worry about a day job. Writing allows me to explore ideas and worlds that don’t exist and be a part of creation; to make something out of nothing (or at least the floating debris of raw material).
Picture

What other authors are you friends with, and how do they help you become a better writer?
A couple years ago, after self-publishing Avenging Angels, a writing critique group formed in my neighborhood. This group of fellow authors and writers has pushed me to improve with each chapter, page, and paragraph. Each has at least one novel under their belt, and though each writes in a different genre, we’re all able to gain some insight and inspiration from each other.
Rick Bennett
Brian C. Hailes
Craig Swapp
I’m also cousin to Charlie N. Holmberg, author of The Paper Magician series.

Where are some of your favorite writing places?
Picture
Right now, with the limited time I have for writing, I only write at work before the rest of the staff arrives. I need absolute quiet to write well, so even writing at home or at a library has too many distractions. If I could, I would build a secret closet in my house and wear sound-cancelling headphones if it meant I could get more than 90 minutes a day to write uninterrupted.

Do you have a set time for writing, or do you tend to have to make time?
Monday through Friday 6:15 – 8:00, but if you count thinking about writing, it’s 24/7/365.
Picture

What has been your favorite book(s) to read so far?
I really enjoy a good science fiction with a dark sense of humor. Lately, I’ve been trying to read outside my own genre, but it’d be easier to pin down a favorite movie than a favorite book. I’m not going to give away my personal tastes for fear of ridicule or rejection.

And that you have written?
Avenging Angels holds a special place in my heart as my first, and longest story. I’m toying with the idea of re-publishing it with a new cover next year since it didn’t get much traction with my 100% all-by-myself approach. However, I’m very pleased with L.E.A.P. (it won an Honorable Mention from WOTF recently) and my new fantasy novel has been pushing me to stretch my writing chops to create an entire world, including three cultures, from scratch.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
The same advice I’ve been given along my own journey. READ and WRITE. Read everything you can, even outside your genre. And with each writing project, push yourself to do better. Incorporate new lessons you learned from the last thing you read or wrote. Sign up for writing tips, newsletters of your favorite authors. Enter contests. And most importantly, no matter how slowly or quickly you write, never stop. Being a writer, for me, is like being a shark: if I stop writing, I’ll die (inside).

Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character from your most recent book?

How much research do you put into your work?
Picture
Much of what I write is based on the sciences I studied in school, but I always have a few browser tabs open to make sure I have the terminology or correctly based technology to back it up. I tend to do my research as I write, as opposed to beforehand. Although, I also do some pre-writing while I’m researching and get some new idea or direction for the story. In the fantasy I’m currently working on, I did a lot of research into different tribal legends as I created the various cultures of my new world.

Do you have any other jobs, aside from writing?
My current day job (to pay the bills) is as a trainer and tech support for an architectural and engineering software called Autodesk Revit for an Autodesk partner here in Utah. I’ve also been in the architectural design field since 2001 and design custom homes on the side.
Picture

Who are some favorite authors of yours?
C.S. Lewis, Tolkien, JK Rowling, Dan Brown, Shakespeare, Pittacus Lore, Douglas Adams, Stephanie Meyer (don’t judge), Cassandra Clare (don’t judge), Suzanne Collins (don’t judge)

Has any of them inspired your style?
The short answer is yes, but it’d be difficult to pin down exactly how.

Some favorite topics to write about are?
Picture
I like stories about the Human Condition. What does it mean to be human? What is freedom/agency? Personal rights and responsibility. Topics that deal with morality i.e. what is right and wrong?

Are you/will you be publishing anything new this year?
In 2017 I’m hoping to have both L.E.A.P. and my new fantasy novel published.

Are you an indie author or do you have an agent?
Currently, I’m indie, but I’m looking for representation.

Who/where are you published through?
I self-published through CreateSpace / Amazon.

Do you have any hobbies?
My hobbies include working my day job, motorcycles, and singing. Another dream of mine, in addition to becoming a financially independent author, is to sing with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

What opportunities have being an author presented you with and share those memories?
So far, making friends in the writing community has been the greatest blessing. I’ve only been seriously trying to make myself known as an author for a couple of years, but in that time, I’ve made many wonderful contacts and even had the privilege of being interviewed by Pat Rullo (@speakupradioh) of Speak up and Talk Radio.
