Who are you?

I’m Virginia Soenksen, author of The Titan Strain, the first book in the Genetics Chronicles.

Where do you live?

In the beautiful Shenandoah Valley

What’s your home life like?

Idyllic. Busy. Lots of baking. Too many poodles.

What genre(s) to you like to write? To read?

As a writer, I like to let my imagination run wild; I don’t enjoy confining my ideas to the limitations of the real world. I’m drawn to create speculative visions of the future, as well as stories that either explore other, more magical worlds or bring a bit of the fantastic into our own reality. I like creating worlds that I’d like to escape to (or at least visit), heroes that I’d like to be friends with, and antagonists I’d like to defeat.

As a reader, I always head straight to either the mystery, science fiction, or fantasy sections in bookstores. Conversely, I’m also a huge fan of reading histories and biographies, mostly because there are so many interesting stories there that will usually inspire story ideas. I find that the more I know, the better my writing becomes. But whatever the genre, I like my books to be filled with great characters.

Why did you start writing?

I think I started writing because I enjoyed reading so much; looking back it seems inevitable that I would try my hand at something I loved. Or perhaps there’s only so much fantasy that one can consume before ideas just start spilling out of you. Once I started, I found that I really liked being able to shape characters and narratives, and just started creating worlds that I found appealing. Writing became a fun escape from the stresses of reality, and still is.

What do you do when you’re not writing?

I’m an art historian and an associate director of an art museum, so I write for work a lot as well. In my free time, I love to travel internationally and discover new places whenever possible.

Where do you like to go when looking for a new book to read?

Bookstores and libraries; I still love the feeling of walking into a room filled with physical books and spending time looking at covers, reading synopses, and carrying around armfuls of new stories.

At what point do you call it quits when reading a new book?

If I find I’m not invested in the survival or success of the characters, I’ll usually turn to something else.

Are you independently or traditionally published?

Traditionally published with Milford House Press, an imprint of Sunbury Press.

How many books/stories have you published so far?

The Titan Strain is my first published book, and happily Sunbury Press has committed to the next two books in the series as well. As an art historian, I’ve also written several articles for Textiles Asia, and I have a book on Japanese textiles forthcoming from Prestel Verlag, Munich.

What book/story are you currently promoting or working on?

The Titan Strain, the first book in the Genetics Chronicles.

What’s the elevator pitch?

The Titan Strain offers a dark, heart-pounding glimpse into the possible future of genetic engineering. In a post-World War III London, humans have developed black-market genetic modification that allows them to take on animalistic strength and speed. Someone is killing these mods, and a genetically advanced assassin and a police officer must team up to solve the murders. As they hunt for the truth, they are drawn into the search for the Titan Strain, a mod serum that offers the opportunity to become more than human.

This book stems from the fact that our world today uses genetic engineering to do incredible things and cure countless diseases. Every day, scientists learn more and more about how to manipulate the genetic structure of humankind. In the true spirit of science-fiction, I wanted to explore what might happen if this desire to change the human genetic code went very, very wrong.

How long have you been working on it?

I wrote the first chapter in 2009 and tucked it away until 2013 when I picked up the story and wrote the first three books pretty much back-to-back. Right now, I’m pondering how or if I want the story to continue.

When will it be available to buy? Where?

The print and ebook are currently available for pre-order, and the book will be released on May 29, 2018. The release date for the second book is still forthcoming; follow me on social media to be the first to know!

How can readers follow you?

Anything you’d like to add?

I love hearing from readers – share what you thought of the book with me or find me on social media and ask questions. Also, I’ve always said that if I ever had fans writing fanfiction with my characters, I’ll die happy. If you love my worlds enough to create your own vision of them, let me know!

My thanks to Virginia Soenksen for her gracious participation in the Laughably Inane Blog. I look forward to sharing my thoughts on her debut novel, The Titan Strain, and wish her the best in all her writing and art-historian related endeavors.
