Who are you?

Hi, I'm Vera Brook (pen name). I'm a neuroscientist turned science fiction & fantasy writer.

Where do you live?

I live in the U.S.

What’s your home life like?

I read a lot and write a lot. :)

What genre(s) do you like to write? To read?

I read and write mostly speculative fiction, anything from hard science fiction to magical realism. I love both novels and short stories. There is so much great fiction published these days, it's a bit overwhelming. Hard to keep up!

Why did you start writing?

My brain made me do it.

What do you do when you’re not writing?

I'm always writing. I'm just double- or triple-tasking sometimes.

Where do you like to go when looking for a new book to read?

I find new books & new authors I like everywhere. Recommendations from writer friends, browsing in the library or in a bookstore, etc. Lately, because I read a lot of short fiction online, if I discover a writer I like, I look for their longer works.

At what point do you call it quits when reading a new book?

Depends on the book.

Are you independently or traditionally published?

I'm independently published for my novels, but in submission to traditional markets for my short fiction. My plan is to be a hybrid author. But if I had to choose, I'd be an indie all the way. I like the creative control and the community, even if it's a lot more work.

How many books/stories have you published so far?

Three novels, three short stories, three coloring books. Weird. With more on the way.

What book/story are you currently promoting or working on?

I mostly promote my SAND RUNNER series, since I have three books out in it - book 1, specifically. I'm almost done with edits on another novel, in a completely new series, and have several more outlined or partly drafted. And I work on short stories in between. I have notebooks full of story ideas, and keep adding to them all the time. I just wish I could write faster.

What’s the elevator pitch?

SAND RUNNER is a fast-paced near-future action adventure with a splash of romance. Think: The Hunger Games but with extreme sports and bionics.

How long have you been working on it?

Time is relative.

When will it be available to buy? Where?

Ebooks are available wide (Amazon, Kobo, Barnes & Noble, Google Books, Apple Books, OverDrive, etc.). Paperbacks are on only on Amazon right now, but I'm hoping to distribute through IngramSpark soon as well.
All the links are on my author website at
verabrook.com.

How can readers find you?

Anything you’d like to add?

I'm delighted to find new readers! I'm a reader first, and I love books in every form. So it's a thrill to entertain readers with my own stories.

Many thanks to Vera Brooks for participating in My Laughably Inane Blog. I wish her all the best in her past, present, and future writing endeavors.

Just a small-town boy with an overactive imagination.
