Who are you?

Hello, I'm Stephen J. Phillips. I've been writing fiction for seven years, after spending 25 years writing about finance and economics.

Where do you live?

I live in Kent, South East England.

What’s your home life like?

I'm married with two adult children and two grandchildren. So life is seldom quiet and never boring.

What genre(s) do you like to write? To read?

I started off writing science fiction with a trilogy of books (Ozymandias, Heraclitus and Zarathustra) set in the near future when humanity develops the ability to travel at 10% of the speed of light, making interstellar travel possible.

I then moved on to more general literature, with two novels set in the 19th and early 20th centuries, The Ice Cream Seller and Raptor (WWI spies).

Two more short science fiction novels set in the far future (The Last Man on Earth and AI Android Insurrection) followed.

Since then I've been focusing on a series of Stories about the Pitt Family set in the early 13th Century. These tales use real people and some real events to provide a backdrop to murder mysteries and adventures which include the Knights Tmplars as facilitators, rather than main characters.

The French Carpenter and The Templar Pitt are already published and available on Amazon in paperback and e-book format, and I'm currently re-editing The Goldsmith's Apprentice and The Flying Mason (to incorporate the comments of an independent editor). These follow the family up to 1209.

My next task is to re-edit The Butcher of Marseille.

I've already started book 6, Murder at the Tower and planned the next stage of the saga, King John's Jewells, which will take us to 1216. I could say I don't know what happens next, but there's always Henry III's regency to play with.

Why did you start writing?

Having given up writing about financial services, I became bored and wanted a new challenge. Fiction has certainly provided this, although I also enjoy the challenge of self publishing.

What do you do when you’re not writing?

Read, walk, spend time with the family and enjoy life.

Where do you like to go when looking for a new book to read?

I tend to read books on Kindle and look for authors I know, although I subscribe to a list which introduces new ones, too.

At what point do you call it quits when reading a new book?

I don't recall giving up on many books ever, but bad grammar and weak story lines frustrate me.

I also don't read anything with gratuitous violence or unnecessary sex. Some sex is necessary, although I don't write much of it as I don't want to embarrass my children (or myself). conversely, with younger readers in mind (I hate limiting my readership), I try to present diversity and "real life" situations.

Are you independently or traditionally published?

Self-published, although I'd like to find an agent if I could.

How many books/stories have you published so far?

Nine books to date all listed on my Amazon author page.

What book/story are you currently promoting or working on?

Promoting The Templar Pitt and editing The Flying Mason (Book four of the Pitt Family Saga).

What’s the elevator pitch?

A young mason falls from the top of the new Chapterhouse in the Templar Citadel in London, under suspicious circumstances.

It quickly becomes clear that this is the tip of an iceberg of criminality in London which leads members of the Pitt family into extreme danger and threatens the fabric of the city.

How long have you been working on it?

I started almost two years ago, but only returned to it recently, after receiving feedback on previous novels.

I've also stopped creating my own covers, so have to pay for a professional designer, out of sales revenue!

When will it be available to buy? Where?

Amazon.

How can readers find you?

Anything you’d like to add?

I appreciate the feedback I've had from readers, particularity some in the USA, but know how seldom people feel inspired to provide reviews.

I've only recently started doing this myself.

My thanks to Stephen for participating in My Laughably Inane Blog. I wish him all the best in his writing and hope he finds a literary agent soon.

Just a small-town boy with an overactive imagination.
