Author Interview with Robin Glassey

Who are you?

Robin Glassey. I'm a clean YA fantasy writer who dabbles in middle-grade fiction and the occasional depressing poem. I'd like to say I'm a french fry connoisseur, but the truth is, I love to eat french fries. My greatest love will always be my sweet husband (I just hope he never asks me to give up fries).

Where do you live?

I'm originally from Eastern Canada, but I live in the Salt Lake valley. As of this year I will now have officially lived just as long in the United States as I lived in Canada.

What’s your home life like?

I'm a mom of four teenage boys. Four. Teenage. Boys. Three of my boys have ADHD and three of them have RAD (reactive attachment disorder). This means I spend a lot of time trying to bring order to the chaos, giving lots and lots and lots of reminders, taking kids to therapy appointments, and helping kids process difficult emotions. Somehow I'm surviving it all.

What genre(s) to you like to write? To read?

I love to write Young Adult fantasy and middle grade contemporary fantasy. I love to read both of those genres as well. I also enjoy reading well-written books on writing craft.

Why did you start writing?

I began writing my YA fantasy series when a foster daughter went back to her birth father and I was struggling with grief over the loss of this particular foster daughter. She'd been in our home for nine months and we'd become very attached. Writing became a way of distracting myself as well as trying to find a way to heal.

This foster daughter returned to our home nine months later and stayed for another seven and a half months before returning to her birth mother and my heart broke all over again. I poured myself into writing to help me deal the grief and loss I was experiencing. Writing helped me to process my emotions and return to a happier self.

What do you do when you’re not writing?

When I'm not writing I'm taking care of my family, attending writing conferences, and volunteering in the League of Utah Writers. I also love to participate as presenter and panelist in conferences such as LTUE, Eagle Mountain Arts Con, Local Authors and You, and FanXSLCC.

Where do you like to go when looking for a new book to read?

I have a large at home library that I'm constantly adding to. My o ldest son has a love for books and often asks for books for Christmas and his birthday. And I admit to scouring the DI (Deseret Industries) shelves for good books as well as the bargain books sections of Seagull Books and Deseret Book store to add to my collection. Plus I tend to pick up a book here and there from fellow authors at book signings. I just can't help myself.

At what point do you call it quits when reading a new book?

While some people lack patience when it comes to reading a new book, I think I give a new book way more pages than others do. Even boring or badly written books. It's like a train wreck or car wreck that you can't look away from. I'll find myself 100 pages in and still reading. I'm terrible that way. Part of me desperately hopes it will get better and it just never does.

Are you independently or traditionally published?

I'm independently published. When I first began writing I attended a writing conference and became convinced by the many authors speaking that self-publishing my series was the way to go. I learned so much about publishing, creating a book and setting up a website in the process of doing so.

How many books/stories have you published so far?

I've published four full-length novels, a novella, and one short story so far. The novels and novella are part of the same YA fantasy series called The Azetha Series.

What book/story are you currently promoting or working on?

I have a few projects I'm currently working on, but the closest to being finished is a short story called CHUD—Cannibalistic Humanoid Underwater Dweller.

What’s the elevator pitch?

A government agent is sent into the sewers of Page Arizona to find out why tourists are going missing. But he soon discovers the only way out may be to become CHUD.

How long have you been working on it?

I've been working on it on and off for a year.

When will it be available to buy? Where?

It will be available by Halloween through retailers such as amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com

How can readers find you?

Anything you’d like to add?

I'm also working on an online course for self-editing your drafts which will be available soon. You can check my website for updates on upcoming projects.

My heartfelt thanks to Robin for participating in my Laughably Inane Author Interview. I look forward to seeing your around the proverbial water coolers of LUW and various writing conventions in the Salt Lake area.
