Who are you?

Ryan Morris. I write under the name R. Tim Morris.

Where do you live?

Vancouver, BC. Rarely too hot. Rarely too cold. Usually raining.

What’s your home life like?

I’m married, have two boys, and work as a library technician.

What genre(s) do you like to write? To read?

My genre of choice (to read & write) is Literary Fiction, but I do like elements of other genres mixed in. I’ve written Mystery, Speculative Fiction, Contemporary, and Adult Humour, but all inevitably fall under the LitFic category. Currently, I’m working on a YA Fantasy novel, which is stretching myself into new territory.

Why did you start writing?

I used to work in the animation industry and made my own comic books in my free time to keep my creative juices flowing. When I found that drawing goofy characters was not getting out what I was really feeling, I turned to writing. Initially, I tried screenplays, since I was more familiar with the format (due to working in the film industry), but when I discovered I actually enjoyed reading, I turned to writing fiction. First as short stories and novellas, until I wanted to challenge myself to write a novel. After that, I was hooked.

What do you do when you’re not writing?

I’m a bit of a board game addict, and try to have a game night with friends once/week. I’m also a big hockey fan (hey, I’m from Canadian!), though I cheer for the New York Rangers.

Where do you like to go when looking for a new book to read?

Part of my job is researching new titles to add to the library collection, so I keep up with what’s trending. But I also follow the amazing #WritingCommunity on Twitter to keep up with all the indie titles out there.

At what point do you call it quits when reading a new book?

I will very rarely quit a book, even if I’m not really into it. I like finish what started. The same goes with movies for me. I think I have an over-commitment problem.

Are you independently or traditionally published?

I self-published my first book (“Molt”) in 2009, but was pretty wet behind ears when it came to how the industry actually works. I almost-immediately regretted not shopping it traditionally. My third (“This Never Happened”) was published by an indie publisher in 2017, but they folded three months after my book’s release (not my fault!). When I finished my fourth book (“To Be Honest”) in 2019, I took the plunge and self-published ALL FOUR of my novels (including the second book, “The Inevitable Fall of Tommy Mueller”) at once, and under my own imprint, which I called Empire Stamp.
All four of my books are currently available in Paperback and eBook formats through most online retailers.

How many books/stories have you published so far?

Four novels. I’ve also had two short stories published, which can be found on my website, along with some other writing.

What book/story are you currently promoting or working on?

Since my books were all published recently, I’m still actively promoting all 4 of them. I’m also working on my new novel, this one is a YA Gothic Fantasy tentatively titled “The Obsidian Revenant.” (see the pitch below!)

What’s the elevator pitch?

Nettle is a Bluebell faerie from the magical realm of Sceanth. After terrible dreams, she wakes in the very unmagical land Erw (pronounced “Roo”), where oceanside fishing villages have been shrouded in an eerie fog, and a protective sea serpent has been kept away by an unknown evil force.
Nettle meets Kole, whose entire village and family have been taken from her, and the two girls explore their burgeoning relationship, while also attempting to figure out what has brought this creeping darkness to Erw, and why. The answers seem to lie in the rare – and mysteriously hidden – black trees known as Obsidian Revenants.

How long have you been working on it?

I started The Obsidian Revenant mid-summer 2019.

When will it be available to buy? Where?

Hoping to be finished a first draft sometime in early 2020. After that it will go through the editing stage, and then I’ll try to shop it around traditionally.

How can readers find you?
