Who are you?

My name is Nova Drake. I am also known as Tyr on The Dark and Stormy Knights podcast. I am an author and a podcaster and a general avoider of reality.

Where do you live?

I'm in the US. Ohio for now, hopefully that'll change someday.

What’s your home life like?

My life is a crazy balance of working too many hours (recruiting industry), raising my clones, and squeezing in time for writing so I don't go completely crazy. Luckily my kids are older and totally on board with the idea of keeping me sane.

What genre(s) do you like to write? To read?

I write fantasy, sci-fi, paranormal romance. My reading preferences are mostly the same but I've never been one to stay inside the lines.

Why did you start writing?

I've dabbled with writing since high school, but it wasn't something I really picked up seriously until around 5 years ago. I've always had a need for creative expression in some form. I had music when I was younger but stopped playing as I got older. After a while, the lack of creation got to me. My coping method was burying myself in books. While I've read some absolutely fantastic books, I also found many that just didn't hit the mark for me. Rather than wishing for more books that portrayed strength, diversity, etc. in the ways I wanted to see them, I wrote.

What do you do when you’re not writing?

Assuming the podcast counts as writing (since it's a writing podcast), working or spending time with the fam. Working on my house when I have time.

Where do you like to go when looking for a new book to read?

Usually kindle recommendations or Twitter. I follow a lot of awesome people in the writing community on Twitter and many of their books are in my TBR list. The Dark and Stormy Knights podcast also does book reviews so some of my reading comes from those submissions as well.

At what point do you call it quits when reading a new book?

I like to give a book a pretty fair chance. Instant gratification is not always an indicator of a good book, so I try not to judge by the opening scene alone. I will read a few chapters and if I haven't been sucked in by then, I'll skip ahead to a little past the halfway point to see if it picks up later on. I know a lot of readers would never do this, but it works for me and I've found some great books that just started off a little slow. The only things that will make me put down a book without a fair chance are things like rationalizing racism and homophobia or romanticizing abuse, rape, etc.

Are you independently or traditionally published?

I am independently published. With the books I have out right now, I don't think the traditionally published route is for me. I prefer to keep full control of my work and there are underlying messages in my books that I wouldn't want to water down to appeal to a wider audience. I might try querying down the road if I write a book that could make it through the process mostly intact.

How many books/stories have you published so far?

Under this pen name I have two books out right now in the Finding Justice series (book 1 and 1.5). I published a YA sci-fi book a few years ago under a different name as well.

What book/story are you currently promoting or working on?

I'm currently promoting book 1 and 1.5 in my Finding Justice series and I am working on Justice Lost book 2. On the podcast we also went through the writing process on the air and wrote a steampunk comedy that is just finishing up. We are in the editing process on that book now and it should be out sometime in 2020.

What’s the elevator pitch?

The Cost of Justice: A senseless attack left Justice alone in a world consumed by corruption and greed. There's no justice in the system, so she's making her own.

Finding Justice Book 1.5: It's hard enough surviving the streets in the outskirts of the border city, but when a new player in town is targeting the area's youth, a bad situation gets worse. In a place where profit is all that matters and human life is expendable, will they be strong enough to survive the lab seeking success at any cost?

Steampunk Comedy: Brought together in the aftermath of tragedy, a group of unlikely heroes and a magic pig invoke the ire of an ancient evil.

How long have you been working on it?

Justice Lost I've been working on since early summer, so about 6 months. The steampunk comedy we've been writing since spring (about 9 months).

When will it be available to buy? Where?

All of my books are available on Amazon. Justice Lost should be out by spring 2020.

For the steampunk comedy we plan on going through all of the steps required for both querying and self publishing so that new authors can get a glimpse at both options. Because of that, there's a lot left to do and we don't have a release date set just yet. If interested, you can follow along on the podcast or follow @thedarkstormyk1 on Twitter.

How can readers find you?

"Writers are not here to conform. We are here to challenge. We're not here to be comfortable - we're here, really, to shake things up. That's our job."
- Jeanette Winterson
"I write to give myself strength. I write to be the characters that I am not. I write to explore all the things I'm afraid of."
- Joss Whedon

Anything you’d like to add?
