Author Interview with MC Sheridan

Who are you?

Hiya! My name is MC Sheridan but you can call me Mea. I'm an NA writer and the author of the series The Adventures of Dauntless Grimm. A high fantasy adventure about a half-elf with a dream of owning her own ship and a decent pair of pants.

Where do you live?

I'm happily living in Southern Ontario, Canada.

What’s your home life like?

My days usually consist of writing, reading, and working out. I really like going for walks and finding new shops to visit in my town, but since the pandemic, I've mostly been at home playing video games, putting together puzzles, and learning how to play the tin flute quite terribly.

What genre(s) do you like to write? To read?

I write High Fantasy Adventures, and I enjoy reading fantasy, horror, and romance, but I'll read pretty much any genre if it catches my interest.

Why did you start writing?

It all began with a TTRPG (Table Top Role Playing Game) that I played with my husband. What started as a one-off session turned into a four-year campaign. I loved playing my character so much that I ended up writing about her. Not just her backstory but short stories as well, and I fell in love with her. When I showed my husband my stories, he enjoyed them so much that he suggested I turned them into a book, and now here I am, still writing her story, and I couldn't be happier.

What do you do when you’re not writing?

I really enjoy being creative. I like to do perler projects, cross-stitch, bake, and pretty much anything to keep my hands busy. I'll usually have the TV or an audiobook going on in the background too.

Where do you like to go when looking for a new book to read?

One of the great things about being a part of the writing community on Twitter is that there is no short supply of great authors and their stories. Every few months, I post a book buying Tweet and purchase a couple of books from my fellow writers. I also get friend recommendations and keep an eye out for new books from my favourite authors.

At what point do you call it quits when reading a new book?

Very rarely do I not finish a book. If I find I'm getting bored, I'll put it down for a bit and pick it up later after I've read something else. I figure, someone took the time to write this, I should take the time to read it. Sometimes a story wanes a bit, but that doesn't mean I'm ready to give up. There's been a few times where I started to lose interest in the second act but found that the third act had reeled me back in again.

Are you independently or traditionally published?

I am an independent publisher.

How many books/stories have you published so far?

Just one novella so far. I'm currently waiting for feedback from beta readers for my second novel.

What book/story are you currently promoting or working on?

I'm promoting my first novella, The Echo: A Prelude to the Adventures of Dauntless Grimm and am currently working on the second book and first full-length novel of the series, The Ship.

What’s the elevator pitch?

The Gods of life and death spoke the world into existence, and their voices left behind a magical resonance called The Echo.

In a world where magic is used for everyday tasks, a non-magical half-elf must fight to obtain her dream of sailing the seas in search of adventure, riches, and even love. The bar brawling she-elf will one day become the most notorious pirate captain to sail the Shimmering Expanse, but not before she's completed her homework assignment.

Join Quesys aboard the Rusty Rod, where it all begins in The Echo: A Prelude to the Adventures of Dauntless Grimm.

How long have you been working on it?

I've been working on the second book, The Ship, for about two years now. I actually started writing it as the first novel, but it didn't feel right to begin it where I did, so I decided to stop so I could write the Prelude first and then continue with The Ship as the second.

When will it be available to buy? Where?

The Echo A Prelude to the adventures of Dauntless Grimm is available now on Amazon.
The second book, The Ship, should be available by summer 2021.

How can readers find you?

What inspires you to keep writing?

When I'm not in the writing mood or feeling nervous about trying something new (like an interview), I tell myself to just go for it. Even if it scares you, do it. You'll be glad you did. And I always am.

Anything you’d like to add?

Thank you so much for this opportunity to talk about my stories. I want to say to anyone just starting out, don't stop. If you truly love writing, don't let the writer's blocks and deleted chapters discourage you. Take a minute, take a day, heck, take a week off, but don't ever stop writing.

Many thanks to MC Sheridan for participating in My Laughably Inane Blog. I wish her all the best on The Ship and her other writing endeavors.

Just a small-town boy with an overactive imagination.
