Author Interview with Matt Johnston

Who are you?

Matt Johnston - just some average joe. I'll generally OK.

Where do you live?

Naseby in the UK relevant to history buffs as the site of the last major battle of the English civil war. It is a sleepy village and a welcome change from London (which I escaped two years ago).

What’s your home life like?

Dog orientated - if you own a dog (let a lone a few of them) you come to understand that there will be sacrifices in terms of furniture a hygiene. But it is great, and makes me wonder why people bother having children.

What genre(s) to you like to write? To read?

What I have published is speculative fiction (elements of time travel, drug experience/reality bending stuff). My magnum opus is going to be a series of five steampunk novels (2 and 1/2)set around a sprawling mythical city.

My personal tastes are more to the historic non-fiction, but must doth a cap to Bukowski, Conrad, Philip K. Dick, Carlos Castaneda and the Russian classics.

Why did you start writing?

Initially as a bucket list project - and a personal challenge (I am dyslexic). That was four years ago and I have got the bug now, and want to write professionally. Also because wanting to write is only part of the equation - the other half being wanting people to read it!

What do you do when you’re not writing?

I have a full time job - living the dream writing dull policy. Other than that the procrastination associated with not writing takes the form of painting and trying to learn the banjo. Not sure you can count drinking as a hobby, but I am a dab hand at cocktails.

Where do you like to go when looking for a new book to read?

I am actually one of the few people who take tips off Twitter - though my choices to date have been a mixed bag. Failing that I find charity shops are good as I tend to get a bit overwhelmed by the choice in big bookstores and charity shops do uncover the odd gem i would probably never have thought about reading.

At what point do you call it quits when reading a new book?

I tend to struggle though to the end if it is well written, but prose only gets me so far. I get annoyed if too much happens to the same characters (for this reason I tend to avoid series), but the main reason I'll stop is if either I realise I don't actually care what happens, or another book catches my interest.

Are you independently or traditionally published?

Independent - unless you count the series of boring policy documents scattered over the internet

How many books/stories have you published so far?

Two, both on Amazon - the first is called dislocate follows the adventures of Francis Kelly, who can manipulate the speed of time (not a particularly moral or stable young woman). The second is called beneath Liquid Skin - which I have tried to make truly bizarre - the best way to explain it is Alice in Wonderland - but Alice is a drug addict on a stag night.

What book/story are you currently promoting or working on?

A novel called Big Sister - a classic revenge in the style of a modern Western, but combining the anthropomorphism of native American cultures and drawing heavily from the writings of Carlos Castaneda.

What’s the elevator pitch?

An abandoned car in the middle of the Arizonian desert is just the start of one woman's revenge, and a psychedelic journey through the mythology of native American culture.

left in an unmarked grave, Isla Ruth is back from the dead, seeking the aid of the world's deadliest killers to take on the mob - and with the help of an Indian shaman, the desert has responded with its very best.

The novel is a fantasy thriller, which draws on the established figure of the unnamed gunslinger used in classic westerns such as Once Upon a Time in the West, and High Plains Drifter. It is also inspired by the writings on Indian mythology by Carlos Castaneda.

How long have you been working on it?

It is relatively short (70,000) and I wrote it in the first six months of last year. I was still hoping for an agent for Beneath liquid Skin at that point so have not started pitching it to agents until spring this year.

When will it be available to buy? Where?

Unless I get an agent i guess I am self publishing (plan to publish this early 2019). Therefore Amazon and kindle is the obvious place to get it, but i do also use nook.

How can readers find you?

Anything you’d like to add?

I am sure something will come to be when I press submit - but at present my mind is blank (like the Word document I have spent the past hour staring at).

My thanks to Matt for joining the list of authors willing to sacrifice their reputations by participating in the Laughably Inane Blog. I wish him all the best in his writing endeavors.
