Author Interview with Edward Massey

Who are you?

I was born and raised in Utah, my mother a direct descendant of pioneers who crossed the ocean and the plains to settle in the dry, high mountains. They survived the loneliness and the threats from outsiders for three generations to produce a daughter who met a Southern Baptist at a church dance. She was smart enough to want a college education and dumb enough to marry a man with no high school education simply because they loved each other. Their second child, a son, had the good luck to win a scholarship. It changed his life. Everything. I have never forgotten it.

Where do you live?

Anne and I live in Norwalk, CT. She is from Maine, and we would gladly live in Maine. I am from Utah and we would gladly live three months a year in Utah, but permanence is near the children.

What’s your home life like?

Our home is now a simple, but comfortable three-bedroom apartment of about 2,500 sf. Anne has a loft and I have an office. We love people and have them over as often as possible, but Covid has put a kink in that.

What genre(s) do you like to write? To read?

I don't like the concept. I have tried to write general literature and it has turned out to be set in the West five (5) times. Clearly that sounds like a genre, but I am not trying to write Westerns. I am trying to write about men at work, they just happen to work in the west.

Why did you start writing?

This will generate too psychological an answer for most tastes. I went to one of the great Universities and they unilaterally put me in "Immigrant Inglisch". While I sort of believe they made the right decision, I have been compelled to prove something. So, I never really had a chance not to start writing.

What do you do when you’re not writing?

I have had an active entrepreneurial live and while I no longer own a baseball team (I owned the New Haven Ravens, Double A, for ten years), I still do some consulting here and there. The fact is, I made a decision fourteen years ago no longer to buy or own a company because the creative juices that make such an effort successful are the same creative juices that are needed in writing.

Where do you like to go when looking for a new book to read?

I don't go much of anywhere, except maybe to the pile of notes on the top of my desk. There are so many great books that I have not read, perhaps some because of my family background, that my problem is deciding, not finding.

At what point do you call it quits when reading a new book?

Tough question. Old, established master. Never quit no matter how little I comprehend what is going on. New, greatest thing since sliced cake. Keep me interested or I'm gone.

Are you independently or traditionally published?

I am traditionally published, but my first book was independently published. My second book was "traditionally" published but by a POD firm. Now, these last three are all with a high quality, reputable firm. Five Star Publishing, a division of Cengage.

How many books/stories have you published so far?

Five books (counting one scheduled by publisher to be release 2022.) Eight stories.

What book/story are you currently promoting or working on?

Founding Sheriff will be published February 17, 2021. Go to Amazon. Order. Write a review. Or write me and I will send you an ARC or a signed copy. As soon as Founding Sheriff is published I will try to give it as much launch as I can before turning to Forever Sheriff which will be published August, 2022.

What’s the elevator pitch?

A cooper named constable in his high mountain country becomes sheriff and faces the challenge of solving the first murder the county and bringing the murderer to justice.

How long have you been working on it?

It's part of a trilogy. The trilogy is now finished and in the publisher's hands. That started in 2015 and finished this past year, so 5-6 years. Founding Sheriff 2018-2019 of the work and then the covid problem set back publication from originally scheduled August, 2020 to Feb, 17, 2021.

When will it be available to buy? Where?

February 17, 2021, on Amazon or any bookstore.

How can readers find you?

What inspires you to keep writing?

"Never, Never give up."
Winston Churchill

I have a book of every Churchill speech. That quote came in a speech at Eton.

Anything you’d like to add?

Yes. I am very happy to do online book clubs (which means you read the book) or book presentations (which means you did not.)
Write me with your interest and I will send you the quarterly schedule.
Edward

This was a great interview. You're good at this! How does an author go about getting interviewed on your blog? :-)
