Author Interview with DW Plato

Who are you?

My real name is hard to pronounce and difficult to spell so…
Picture
Plato is a pseudonym I came up with in fourth grade. Then, it was going to be JW Plato. DW ended up being my actual initials after I got married so it made sense to just use DW, it’s how I sign already so I didn’t have to think much about the actual writing of it. In real life, I’m a certified forensic document examiner (fancy name for handwriting analyst) so the writing of it became important. Plato is also my mother’s maiden name, it’s sentimental (or just mental… all depends on the day of the week, lol.)

Where do you live?

I live in the Land of Enchantment. It’s my belief that New Mexico is America’s best kept secret so sshhh… More specifically, in a little town called Edgewood, if you scramble the letters it spells Goodweed.

I’ve been trying to get the Chamber of Commerce to change the name, (to attract more tourism, of course…) they don’t seem very receptive to it.

What’s your home life like?

The proverbial ‘happily ever after’! My husband and I are recent empty-nesters. We’ve raised two incredible, strong, amazing young women that are upper-classmen at UNM.

What genre(s) to you like to write? To read?

I haven’t found a genre I like well enough to stick with… I like to dip-my-toes into everything, it’s the same with food, travel etc... My favorite author is Jodi Picoult, but that doesn’t mean anything… lol…

Why did you start writing?

WHY? What do you mean? (lol) I’ve never NOT written. I have journals & short stories dated back to the 70’s plus memories of standing on a kitchen chair typing on a fifty-pound manual typewriter when I was in kindergarten. It’s been a goal of mine to be a published author forever, literally, my whole life. After a tragedy in our family in ’15 I realized how short life really is and wrote the Sinners’ Club to scratch ‘write a book’ off my bucket list. I realized I enjoyed it (and am good at it) so I kept writing more books. I’m chatty/wordy so books are easier to me than blogs or articles.

What do you do when you’re not writing?

I love to travel! When I’m not traveling or writing, I’m helping my husband run our company. (you know, to make more money to publish more books… lol… which is what I should be doing right… lol…)

Where do you like to go when looking for a new book to read?

I’m an audio junkie so… I usually shop for my books in the audiobook section of iTunes or Audible.com. I’m also a big Goodreads fan and think there are some great resources there too.

At what point do you call it quits when reading a new book?

When I’m to the last page. No matter how horrible it is, I keep ‘pluggin’ away’… I usually can find some redeeming quality in every book. (and I’m usually listening on audio- a good narrator can make a three-star book into a five-star ish read)

Are you independently or traditionally published?

Indie- and when asked why (which I know you didn’t but I’m telling you anyway), I feel like I’m still a beginner. I need practice. I may start to query traditional publishing houses this fall with my fourth book only because I’m finally feeling like I’m getting it right.

How many books/stories have you published so far?

Three.

What book/story are you currently promoting or working on?

When I took my SATs in high school, the counselor said, ‘Girl, you need to go into sales’. I’m a marketer at heart, so… long story short, I’m promoting them ALL!

Glue will be available in audio this summer and I’ll be ramping up a promo for that. Trials&Tribulations of Modesty Greene just came out in March so I’m also promoting it (it will be on audio this fall). Between the three, I’ve got a little something for everyone- rated G, PG-13 and XXX! LOL!

What’s the elevator pitch?

HA! Who am I in the elevator with?! (I have many pitches… fast ball, screw ball, lob, curve ball…) but seriously, I’m so non-traditional, I pitch DW Plato as a product. A book a year should tempt someone, right? That’s a personal goal of mine, to write a book a year for the rest of my life… I’m marketable and a hard worker, seriously… someone, somewhere should be looking for an author like that, right?

How long have you been working on it?

‘It’ takes me 6-7 months to write a book and 6-7 months to edit and get cover art done, etc. I have over a dozen ideas for novels.

When will it be available to buy? Where?

I’m available in all the regular places, Amazon, Kindle, AudioBooks, etc.

How can readers follow you?

Follow me… I’m fun.

Anything you’d like to add?

When I was a kid, one of my uncles learned the piano when he turned forty. At the time I thought, ‘why tho’… now fifty is dawning on my horizon, I get it. Don’t give up what you’re passionate about, don’t think because you’re an adult there’s nothing else out there to learn or inspire. My favorite hashtag (and life motto) is #dowhatyoulove (it’s a lifestyle)
THANK YOU Nicholas.

My heartfelt thanks to DW for spending some time letting us get to know her and her writing. I've enjoyed our collaborations on Twitter and look forward to reading more of your work.
