Who are you?

My name is Don C. Kean. I am a retired dentist. I currently work as a retail manager.

Where do you live?

I live in the great state of Kentucky. We are known for bourbon, (which I don't drink anymore), horse races, (which I don't bet on anymore), and we have more waterways than any other state, (which are teeming with fish that I try to catch when I can).

Whats your home life like?

My home life is fairly stable, if their is such a thing. I am married with one daughter age 26.

What genres do you like to read or write?

I primarily like biographies and history. I am especially focused on The American Civil War era. It was without a doubt the most pivotal and interesting era of our great countries history.

Why did you start writing?

Believe it or not, it all started on my honeymoon. Me and my wife went to Kentucky Lake for a week. (And no I didn't force her to go their, she really wanted to). While not fishing, we toured the area. During a chance visit to Fort Donelson my life was changed forever. I was deeply inspired and fell in love with my new found study of the American Civil War. My research and reading of the period soon led to my inspiration to write a story.

What do you do when you're not writing?

I like to fish, but not in the winter. I follow my beloved Kentucky Wildcats, and I like to read and write about The American Civil War.

Where do you look for new books to read?

I primarily search online sites for reads that I come across in my studies.

At what point do you call it quits when reading?

I rarely quit on a book. I guess I'm too cheap and strive to get my monies worth. One aspect I find extremely frustrating when reading about The American Civil War is when an author lets his own personal political views distort the true facts of history.

Are you independently or traditionally published?

I am Independently published.

How many books have you published so far?

I have published one book. I have also published several short stories on various dramas from the civil war era as well as some concise biographical sketches of historical figures from the era.

What book are you currently working on?

I have already published a historical fiction entitled "I Didn't Sign Up For This". I am still trying to promote it in between my hectic work schedule. It has received strong reviews, but I need more. I am also considering compiling my short stories into a book in the future.

Whats the elevator pitch?

It is a high rise skyscraper elevator with a lot of floors, but here goes. It is a story about growing up and making critical decisions about one's path in life. It deals with accepting the consequences of those decisions both good and bad. The central character, J.D. Sims, grows up in remote Western Kentucky on what is now Kentucky Lake, (my favorite place in the world), during the period leading up to the American Civil War. His decision to enlist quickly puts the harsh realities of war and life squarely in his path. The story will take you deeply into the war as it is seen through J'D.'s eyes. The war scenes are quite graphic as they describe in brutal detail the suffering, gore, and hardship of combat. J.D spends several days in a war hospital witnessing death and copious amputation procedures. His experiences leave him bitterly scarred and terribly conflicted. His war experience is only part of his struggle. He is greatly troubled about returning home at the wars termination feeling he will never fit in. Once their his nightmares are only beginning as he suffers flashbacks and dreams of the horrors he encountered. The story contains a pure and beautiful 19th century style romance. If you love a strong and beautiful female character, then Susan is certainly your kind of girl. The book also deals with a very strong and significant spiritual dimension. It is a true roller coaster ride of deep emotional anguish.

How long have you been working on it?

I worked on the entire writing process for close to two years. However I researched the subject for about four years prior by reading numerous biographies and civil war diaries.

When and where is the book available?

The book is available on Amazon and most online bookstores.

How can readers find you?

What inspires you to keep writing?

"Life is not fair. Fairness is only an ideal state of mind, not a guaranteed condition of life. Only then can we clearly realize that fair is truly just a place with cotton candy, farm animals, and a carnival."
"One's past experiences are sometimes forgiven and usually forgotten but they are always in the past......unless you are forced to relive them your nightmares."
The words Duty and Love are truly synonyms.

Anything you'd like to add?

Just a big thanks to you for your time and consideration.

My thanks to Dr. Kean for participating in My Laughably Inane Blog. I wish him all the best with his personal and writing endeavors.
