Author Interview with Brian C. Hailes

Who are you?

As far as who I am, I'm a dad to six wonderful boys (two in Heaven and four with my wife and I, keeping things interesting here at home). My wife and I both work and watch the kids.
I write, illustrate, and do graphic design full-time, and I've also launched an art contest /video tutorial series for young artists (
www.drawitwithme.com).

My favorite thing is storytelling, and I've been writing and illustrating books since I was in grade school. I hope for that to become my bread and butter, though the graphic design currently pays most of the bills.

Where do you live?

I currently live in Draper/Suncrest, a suburb of Salt Lake City, Utah.

What’s your home life like?

Crazy. Busy. Though I'm sure 90% of the population might answer that way. I'm mostly a hermit, escaping to my dungeon basement office to crank out project after project, story after story and illustration after illustration (between changing diapers, preparing meals, hot-tubbing, traveling, wrestling 2-8 year olds, weight-lifting and watching the latest interesting shows)

What genre(s) do you like to write? To read?

That's one of my (marketing) problems. I like to write in varied genres for varied audiences: fantasy, sci-fi, thriller, children's, even a random dramatic short story. Mostly I enjoy writing things that couldn't actually happen or be photographed—to transport a reader (and myself) from the mundane or everyday.

Why did you start writing?

I've always had the inner drive to tell stories, whether visually or by narrative means. Similar to the drive to eat delicious things.

What do you do when you’re not writing?

When I'm not writing, you can usually find me drawing, painting, eating, lifting, swimming, visiting friends/family, biking, traveling, serving in my church, reading, or purchasing the latest art book on Amazon.

Where do you like to go when looking for a new book to read?

I hate to say it, but I support the Amazon monopoly monster. And speaking of monopolies, I've also been on a Disney cruise *sigh* Although I jump at the chance to shop elsewhere anytime I receive a gift card.

At what point do you call it quits when reading a new book?

If it doesn't grab me by the throat and hold open my eyelids within the first two chapters, I'm gonzo. Too busy to waste time on something mediocre, rehashed, mundane, too complicated to follow or regurgitated. Unless it's a children's book, then I'll probably still look at the rest of the pictures . . . if they're decently executed.

Are you independently or traditionally published?

Both. I've been published by Galaxy Press, Inc., Arcana Comics, Scholastic, Inc., Mattel/American Girl, but I've also launched several titles under our own publishing imprint, Epic Edge Publishing.

How many books/stories have you published so far?

Let's count. Blink, Devil's Triangle, Dragon's Gait, Skeleton Play, Continuum, Passion & Spirit: The Dance Quote Book, Heroic: Tales of the Extraordinary, two WOTF anthologies, three American Girl books, and I'm just about to release a new children's book, Don't Go Near the Crocodile Ponds. What's that, 13? 13.

What book/story are you currently promoting or working on?

Besides the children's book, Crocodile Ponds, I'm finishing up two more novels: Defender of Llyans (fantasy) and Avila (sci-fi).

What’s the elevator pitch?

Blink and Crocodile Ponds are my latest releases, so I'll give the spiel on those (and I haven't written the synopsis for Llyans or Avila yet):

Blink: To win a secret war waged by The Establishment, ex black-ops soldier, Blink, must find and expose the true colors of the men behind the elite organization, which has been manipulating governments since the time of Napoleon.

Don't Go Near the Crocodile Ponds: When separated from the safety of their respective herds (despite constant warnings from their mothers to stay close), young wildebeest, Jaffer, and zebra friend, Akeem, set out across the vast African savannah to find them. But can they make their way home without falling prey to the many dangers lurking in the wilds of the harsh and endless grasslands?

Yes, they are very different.

How long have you been working on it?

My problem is, I'm always working on (at least) five books at a time, so each book takes approximately five years. However, five divided by five is one, so let's say each book takes one year. That sounds better. Yes. One year per book.

When will it be available to buy? Where?

Blink was just released a couple weeks ago, so it is NOW AVAILABLE pretty much wherever books are sold. Crocodile Ponds will be out in a couple weeks, just in time for the holidays.

What inspires you to keep writing?

"I don't like to write. I like to have written."
