Who are you?

Michael Darling, award-winning and #1 Amazon bestselling author of The Behindbeyond series and numerous short stories.

Where do you live?

I do live in a house now, but my mother was constantly asking me if I was born in a barn as a kid. You’d think she’d know where I was born, right? I’m pretty sure she was there when it happened.

What’s your home life like?

My wife and I share our Rocky Mountain hideaway with six guinea pigs, one of whom thinks she’s a dog and three of whom claim to be children. Thus far, the I.R. S. hasn’t come around to verify our dependents but the “children” do bear a strong resemblance to human offspring. We love watching movies, reading books, and making fancy dinners. My wife is a flight attendant, so we also have an “out-of-home” life. My favorite place to visit thus far is London. Ireland is absolutely on my bucket list though, considering the Celtic motifs in my stories.

What genre(s) to you like to write? To read?

Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Horror, Mystery, Thriller . . . they’re all good! And I always have choices to suit my mood. I like to say that my writing is inspired by my favorite “Harry’s:” Harry Bosch, Harry Potter, and Harry Dresden. Bosch is featured in a series of incredibly good police procedurals written by Michael Connelly. Of course, J.K. Rowling’s books are just wonderful. Everything in her world is magical, which makes Potter so engaging. And there’s really no way to write urban fantasy without being compared to the grandmaster, Jim Butcher. Happily, reviews for my books are favorable overall and I’ve also been compared to other authors, such as Carl Hiaasen, Robert Parker, Robert Crais, and Rowling too. So that broad spectrum of “authors-whom-I-resemble” tells me I’m writing well but not really camping out in anyone else’s ballpark.

Why did you start writing?

It’s not just too much fun -- it’s three much fun! Also because I’ve always had stories and characters in my head. After a while, they get claustrophobic and want to be let out, so I write.

Where do you like to go when looking for a new book to read?

Writer’s conventions! Then I can get autographed copies! Otherwise, I really prefer hardbacks if I can get them from the bookstore or online. After that, paperbacks with Kindle third. Subscribing to Book Bub is pretty helpful for finding titles. Haven’t really gotten into audio books.

At what point do you call it quits when reading a new book?

Ooo. Yeah. I used to finish almost everything I started, because you can learn from bad writing as well as good writing, but there’s just not enough time anymore. Now I look for plot points that don’t make sense or characters who are stupid or poorly-written. I can put up with writing that’s not perfect if the voice is strong but I’m almost looking for a reason to stop reading so I can take the next title off my stack and start a new story. In that regard, I read more like an acquisitions editor than a casual reader.

Are you independently or traditionally published?

Traditionally, through Future House Publishing, which has become a really great house for new authors in science fiction and fantasy.

How many books/stories have you published so far?

My novels are in “The Behindbeyond” series and there are two books so far. Got Luck is the first of the series and Got Hope is the sequel. I’ve also published around seven or so short stories in different anthologies. Those are a mix of fantasy, sci-fi, and horror.

What book/story are you currently promoting or working on?

I’m promoting both novels, essentially, because the series is new and readers generally like to start with the first one. The sequel has a higher rating, however, on both Amazon and Goodreads, currently 4.9 out of 5.0 on Amazon. They both work well in promoting each other. And I’m working on book three right now, titled Got Lost, which is set for release in early 2018.

What’s the elevator pitch?

Since discovering The Behindbeyond, Goethe “Got” Luck has seen a lot of crazy things. Many of which tried to kill him. Then he meets the craziest thing of all. A mortal girl using magic. Who tries to kill him. Her name is Alyce, a girl who was kidnapped more than 25 years ago. More children vanish, stolen right beneath Got’s nose. When Got tries to find out why, he encounters enemies both old and new, including the powerful Goddess of Dreams. Soon, Got has the F.B.I. asking questions too. With threats building in both the mortal realm and the realm of the Fae, Got’s got to find answers before he ends up in dreamland forever.

How long have you been working on it?

I usually begin with research and making notes, but I don’t complete an outline. Once I start writing, I proceed from the first chapter and go straight through the story all the way through. I know pretty much what the scenes will be and it’s fun to stitch them together although things often change along the way. After the story has a beginning, middle, and end I go back and fix things. Once I get going on the first draft, it takes 5-6 months for me to get through and I started Got Lost in April. I should have a draft ready for editing by October.

When will it be available to buy? Where?

With the series inspired by Celtic mythology, we have targeted St. Patrick’s Day for each book’s release. Books are available in stores and on Amazon.

Anything you’d like to add?

Thanks a million much for having me!

My heartfelt thanks to the Amazing Michael Darling for taking the time to answer my laughable questions and letting me get to know him better as an author.

I'm personally a YUGE fan of his work and look forward to more in the future.
