Author Interview: Cara Fox

Who are you?

Cara Fox is an English author trying to write her way out of the dark. She favours steampunk, horror and Gothic fiction, but you can find her anywhere that the stories sink their claws into you and the wine is flowing freely. Her work has been featured in the Tales To Terrify podcast, and she has stories due for release in anthologies by Fluky Fiction and Owl Hollow Press.

What genre(s) to you like to write? To read?

Gothic horror has always been the genre I find myself coming back to time and time again. I grew up reading books like Dracula, Jane Eyre and Frankenstein, and it’s those early influences which have really shaped my literary interests. An early love for Jules Verne has manifested itself in the steampunk tales I write now, but it’s nearly always classic and Gothic horror I find myself at home with.

Why did you start writing?

It’s hard to pin it down. I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t creating stories one way or another. I was very much the stereotypical bookworm always curled up in a corner reading, and being immersed in literature from such a young age sparked a passion for creating my own stories which really took off after I had my first daughter. I was blessed with a baby who liked to sleep more than anything else (not so lucky the second time around!), so during the quiet evenings I began to take the stories out of my head and onto the page. I haven’t been able to stop since then. Writing is very much both a passion and an addiction for me.

What do you do when you’re not writing?

Writing (and Twitter!) take up nearly all my free time. But I’m also studying for a degree in English Literature and Creative Writing, I dabble in political journalism, and when I need to clear my head, I love to sit down and crochet. I’ve yet to meet another horror writer who successfully combines the two.

Where do you like to go when looking for a new book to read?

I prefer to support small publishers these days, and reading multi-author anthologies from indie publishers is a fantastic way of finding new authors whose books you might enjoy, so that’s generally the first place I turn when I want something new.

At what point do you call it quits when reading a new book?

I don’t have much spare time and my ‘to be read’ list is shamefully long, so I have to be ruthless these days. All the books I’ve read and loved hooked me within the first few pages, so I don’t give a new book any more than one chapter to pull me in. It’s a great lesson for writing as well – don’t open with a ton of exposition. Get stuck straight into the story and the action, and make sure your reader doesn’t want to put the story down!

Are you independently or traditionally published?

Both. I write historical romance under a nom de plume and I’ve had success self-publishing in that genre, but for now I’m focused on traditional publishing in horror and science fiction.

What book/story are you currently promoting or working on?

I’m currently coming to the end of the first draft of a steampunk novel, The Strange Case of Doctor Magorian. Once that is done I have a shorter steampunk novella, Rosa Romano and the Shadowmaster that I want to get down, and then when those are both edited and looking for a home, I may turn to a cyberpunk story I’ve been bouncing around for a while. I like to stay busy!

How can readers follow you?

Anything you’d like to add?

Thank you to Nicholas for hosting me! My short story, Life In Sepia, will be featured alongside his work in the upcoming Fluky Fiction anthology, ‘When Glints Collide’, and I’m honoured to be a part of such a great set of authors.
