 Who are you?

My life revolves around science – both science fact and science fiction. I am a Ph.D. candidate in the Genetics and Molecular Biology program at Emory University, though I also conduct research at the University of Georgia.

I’m a graduate of Kennesaw State University, where I received a B.S. in Biotechnology. I spend most of my time working in a research lab investigating the effects of toxic substances on human biological processes and the mechanisms by which they work. If I’m not working in the lab, I’m usually weaving my knowledge of science into a story. There’s no escaping it!

Where do you live?

I live in a quiet, tiny town just outside Athens, Georgia.

What’s your home life like?

I share a house and some acreage with two very affectionate cats that follow me like tiny, fluffy shadows, two ornery chickens that like to gleefully remind me that their ancestors were dinosaurs that would have gladly eaten me, a sweet bird that worships my existence, and two goldfish that would be lap dogs if they could. My time at home typically involves splitting my time between playing fetch with one particularly needy cat and holding the other animals.

What genre(s) to you like to write? To read?

I like to read science fiction and fantasy, but I’m open to reading any story that promises excitement and adventure. My stories also typically fall into the science fiction and fantasy genres. I’ve always found those genres enticing due to the sheer impossibility and grandeur of them. I’ve also found that they’re more malleable in terms of the messages they can send. I can say a lot more in a science fiction and fantasy story than I can when writing in any other genre.

Why did you start writing?

I don’t think I ever had a choice in the matter! I started writing down my stories as soon as I developed writing skills, and I haven’t stopped! For me, the ability to tell stories to others is a part of my personality. I’m incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to not only write, but to so easily share my stories with others and receive their reactions to the worlds and situations I’ve created. I’ve recently discovered that there is a great amount of joy that comes with having someone relate so closely to my characters and to hear that my story touched them. I’ve had people tell me that they’ve read my book multiple times, and it brings me to tears to have received such support.

What do you do when you’re not writing?

Typically, I spend my free time having movie nights with my friends and family. If I have more time, I’ve been an avid horseback rider since I was a child, and I also enjoy the outdoors. If I get the opportunity, I enjoy hiking and kayaking.

Where do you like to go when looking for a new book to read?

Everywhere! I can’t resist a book store, and I’m fortunate to have friends – both writers and non-writers—who enthusiastically share books with me!

At what point do you call it quits when reading a new book?

There are very few books I have not been able to finish. Typically, when I pick up a new book, I don’t put it down until I reach the end.

Are you independently or traditionally published?

I independently published Child of Humanity as an eBook and a paperback through Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) and CreateSpace, respectively. The audiobook will be produced through Audible’s Audiobook Creation Exchange (ACX).

How many books/stories have you published so far?

Child of Humanity is the first book of what will hopefully be many!

What book/story are you currently promoting or working on?

I’m currently promoting Child of Humanity, and I’ve just started writing a fantasy novel.

What’s the elevator pitch?

Child of Humanity has been described as “deeply emotional” and “a story about being courageous, love, friendship, sacrifice, and hope.” Child of Humanity is written from the perspective of the main character, Allyson Owens. Allyson is a college student at Florida Eastern University. She lives with three roommates and was raised in a normal, nuclear family with a loving mother, father, and older sister. Except she wasn’t. Allyson isn’t really Allyson. Allyson Owens is an alien Doppelganger living a double life. For twenty years, she’s been living as a human, but now her time is up, and it’s time to return to the alien organization known as the Peacemakers and to her life as Saira Ta’u. However, when Allyson returns, her world is warring against itself, and Earth has been caught in the crossfire. Before Allyson can understand what’s happening, she’s stranded back on what’s left of Earth, trapped in a decaying, artificial body with her three human roommates. As Allyson struggles to keep her friends alive, she’s forced to confront an unbearably painful reality: her organization was never benign, and she was not the person she believed she was.

How long have you been working on it?

Child of Humanity took me four years to write. When the audiobook is released, it will be over five years since I began it.

When will it be available to buy? Where?

Child of Humanity is available now on Amazon, Google Books, Goodreads, in some  book stores (only Walls of Books in Watkinsville, GA has copies on the shelf at this time), and through other online sellers.

How can readers follow you?
